Coffee in Kenya was introduced as a commercially grown product in 1895 by protestant and catholic missionaries. Dr. Henry Scott was one of the early protestant missionaries that brought the first 100 coffee seeds from Reunion Island. After his death, the department of agriculture named a medical complex “Scott Labs”. This is the origin of the “SL” varietal name!

Thirikwa is a cooperative that operates out of one factory called Gakuyu-ini. This cooperative upholds high quality standards that allow for an excellent product and high pay to the members. After the coffee is washed, sorted, and dried for 8-14 days, Gakuyu-ini recycles the processing water, which comes from the Kiri river.

This coffee is extremely creamy with notes of tropical fruits up front and a savory, tangy finish of tamarind as it cools.
